The West Virginia University tennis team fell 0-4 against the BYU Cougars at the Summit Tennis Academy in Morgantown, as the Mountaineers remain winless in Big 12 matchups. BYU (16-6, 4-3 Big 12) took an early lead and never looked back, dispatching the Mountaineers (6-13, 0-8 Big 12) with ease.
Tullis and Levelston
The Cougars took the doubles point to start things off, as the No. 3 doubles were won 6-3 by Elizabeth Tullis and Grace Levelston over the WVU pairing of Lyla Byers and Maja Dodik and the No. 2 matchup was taken by 6-3 by BYU’s tandem of Sue Yan Tan and Bobo Huang vs WVU’s Michaela Kucharova and Laura Villanueva Morillo.

BYU doubled their lead to start the singles, as the No. 2 spot went to Levelston in a 6-2, 6-1 win over Julie Bousseau. The Cougars added another in the No. 1 slot, as Huang defeated Mille Haagensen 6-1, 6-3 to make it 3-0. The win was clinched at the No. 5 singles, with Tan winning 6-4, 6-3 against Villanueva Morillo. The win puts BYU above .500 in conference play, as they now are tied for eighth place out of 16 teams with Kansas.
Kendall Kovick
In the unfinished matchups, Kendell Kovick led Kucharova 7-6 (7-4 tiebreaker), 3-2 at the No. 3 singles and Chelsea Bluestein led Dodik 7-5, 2-1, while Byers won the first set against Madison Smith 6-3 before trailing 5-2 in the second set.
What’s Next
There will be a bit of flying around next weekend, with a game on Friday at 2 p.m. at Houston before facing off against UCF at noon on Sunday. The Mountaineers are looking to remain undefeated against UH, having beaten them 4-3 in 2010 and 6-1 last year in Morgantown. On the other hand WVU seeks their first win against UCF, having lost 2-5 in their first ever matchup last year in Morgantown.
UCF (14-1, 6-0 Big 12) is first in the conference, while Houston (3-10, 0-7) is second to last.
