WVU Hits Second Season-High Score in Just One Week

Another Chapter in the Backyard Brawl

For the second time this week, in back-to-back meets, WVU records a new season-high team score. Recording a 196.275 team score at the dual meet in the Fitzgerald Field House, WVU unfortunately fell to Pitt who scored a 196.575, continuing the Backyard Brawl rivalry.  

Team Performance

WVU continues to heat up, earning its second 196.0+ score of the season. This marks the first time since 2023 that the Mountaineers have recorded multiple scores of 196.0 or higher, tying for No. 33 among the top 50 team scores in WVU gymnastics history.  

WVU also continues to show improvement in all four events, reaching new season highs on vault (48.925), the uneven bars (48.95), and balance beam (49.1). With a 49.3 on floor exercise, the Mountaineers achieved a season-best, the highest since the NCAA Regionals on March 31, 2023.

Individual Standouts

Fifthyear senior Trinity Macy and senior Brooke Alban both achieved season highs to start off the evening. Macy finished slightly ahead of Alban, coming in with a 9.85. Alban followed closely behind with a 9.825.  

On vault, Alban again surpassed a new season high with a 9.875, while matching her career best. Sophia Rice, freshman, also came close to her career high of 9.85 with a 9.825. Rice’s score of 9.825 placed her in a tie for second place on vault. 

WVU’s Top Finishers

The highest WVU finisher was Anna Leigh, coming in at 3rd place overall with a score of 29.500. On beam, Leigh achieved a second-place finish. Tied for fourth place overall was Brooke Alban, scoring 29.475. Alban also secured the win on vault. Amber Lowe tied for 7th place overall with a score of 29.400. Trinity Macy finished 10th overall with a score of 28.575, tying for first place on bars.  

Looking Ahead for the Mountaineers

The next two meets before the start of the Big 12 Championship are versus Penn and Ohio State. WVU will take on Penn at The Palestra at 6p.m. on Friday, March 14th, in Philadelphia, Pa. Ohio State will be the last regular season meet at 2p.m. March 16th, in Columbus, Ohio at the Covelli Center.
