Round one of the NCAA Regionals was held on Wednesday, April 2nd, inside Penn State’s Rec Hall in University Park, Pa. The West Virginia gymnastics team fell to Maryland with a final score of 196.25-195.325. Read more WVU Earns Second Place in Round One of NCAA Regionals.
WVU on Bars
For the sixth meet in a row, WVU opened on bars. We started off with a fall in the leadoff position, which put pressure on the next to perform, Amber Lowe.
Lowe (sophomore) didn’t let the pressure get to her though, leading the way with a score of 9.75. Trinity Macy (5th-year senior) followed closely behind with a score of 9.725.
Anna Leigh (senior) tallied a score of 9.7, even with Brooke Irwin (junior) who also tallied a 9.7.
To finish the bars, Jayden McDonnell came in and finished with a score of 9.675.
Vault
Freshman Emerson Smith started off WVU on vault with a score of 9.8, which closely skimmed her career high. Sophia Rice and Taylor Tuohy (both freshmen) matched their scores of 9.75. Karleigh DiCello (freshman) followed shortly behind with a score of 9.725.
To wrap up the rotation, Brooke Alban (senior) scored a 9.675.

Floor Exercise
On the floor, Leigh started the event with a solid 9.875. Rice scored a 9.825.
Riley Maness (freshman) earned a 9.8, followed by Alban and Smith both with scores of 9.775.
Beam
Julia Brown hit a career-high of 9.9. This event marked Brown’s FIRST career score of 9.9 or higher. Her team was ecstatic after her finish, and it was clear that Brown deserved her score of 9.9.
Eden Webster (freshman) scored a 9.825, which brought her close to topping her career high.
Leigh scored a 9.8, and DiCello scored a 9.775.
To wrap up the beam rotation, Nelson achieved a 9.725.
Final Event Standings
Smith finished 2nd on vault, Brown tied for 1st on beam, and Leigh finished 2nd place on floor.
WVU’s 2025 campaign came to an end with this result.
Maryland Terps Advance to Second Round
In this competition, Maryland scored their third-highest NCAA Regional score in school history. It also marked Maryland’s first head-to-head win over West Virginia in program history.
Maryland won three of four events and only trailed by 0.025 on the beam.
In round 2, the Maryland Terps will face LSU (No. 1), Arkansas (No. 16), and Michigan. This event will be the Regional Semifinal, and will take place on April 3rd at 7p.m. The top two teams from sessions one and two will advance to the Regional Final, which will be held on April 5th at the Rec Hall.
What Comes Next for WVU?
Although the West Virginia University gymnastics team’s season has come to an end, Leigh (floor), DiCello (vault, beam), and Rice (vault) will compete again in Round 2 on Thursday, April 3rd, as individual event specialists.
