The West Virginia Mountaineers baseball team’s first conference road trip has not gone as planned, as the first two games against Oklahoma State have seen postponement and now cancellation. Read WVU baseball’s first two games at Oklahoma State postponed then cancelled due to fires and winds below.
The opening game was initially postponed Friday afternoon, as “extreme wind causing hazardous conditions” saw it pushed back to a Saturday doubleheader.
Hours later, Oklahoma State Athletics put out a press release stating, “In the immediate aftermath of a historic outbreak of fires in the area, all of Saturday’s scheduled home athletic events at Oklahoma State have been canceled.”

Sunday’s 2 p.m. game at O’Brate Stadium remains scheduled, but all eyes will be on if that is cancelled too. If the game proceeds as scheduled, it is possible the starters who were slated to start the other two games see extended action in relief.
These developments come in the wake of winds and fires ripping across the state of Oklahoma, as AccuWeather states “at least 3 dead” as “some gusts have approached 100 mph.” Additionally according to Fox Weather, “Evacuations were ordered in some Oklahoma communities as more than 130 fires were reported across the state. The State Patrol said winds were so strong that they toppled several tractor-trailers.”
Heading into Sunday
What will happen if Sunday’s matchup does not proceed remains yet to be seen, but in any case the Mountaineers are scheduled to face the James Madison Dukes at home on Tuesday at 6 p.m. and Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
All three of Oklahoma State University, West Virginia University and James Madison University are on spring break, so the flexibility remains for moving games around to accommodate changed schedules. Whether that happens or not remains to be seen.
As it stands both West Virginia and Oklahoma State are tied for eighth place in the Big 12 by nature of being the only two teams with a 0-0 conference record.
The Mountaineers are 15-1 and ranked No. 13 by Perfect Game, No. 21 by National College Baseball Writers of America and No. 24 by USA Today Sports. The Cowboys are 9-7 and unranked.
The all-time series is 23-16 in OSU’s favor, though WVU is 9-7 in games hosted by Oklahoma State, with a 5-10 record in Morgantown. West Virginia holds the most recent win in the series, having won 15-10 at Kendrick Family Ballpark last March 31.
