West Virginia Women’s Faces Kansas State in the Big 12 Quarterfinals

The West Virginia Mountaineers women’s basketball team is set to face the Kansas State Wildcats in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship quarterfinals tomorrow, following the latter’s 80-65 victory over UCF in the second round. Read more West Virginia Women’s faces Kansas State in the Big 12 quarterfinals. 

No. 16 WVU (23-6, 13-5 Big 12) and No. 20 KSU (25-6, 13-5 Big 12) have met once this season, with the No. 17 Mountaineers defeating the No. 12 Wildcats 70-57 in Morgantown on Feb. 17. when senior All-Big 12 guard JJ Quinerly scored 26 points. 

The Wildcats

Kansas State is led by fellow first-team All-Big 12 guard Serena Sundell, as the Marryville, MO native is averaging 13.5 points and 7.1 assists this season. Also contributing for the Wildcats are third-team All-Big 12 forward Temira Pointdexter (12.7 PPG) and honorable mention All-Big 12 guard Jaelyn Glenn. In addition, sophomore guard Zyanna Walker was selected to the All-Big 12 defensive team.

While KSU excels at both ends of the floor, offense is their bread and butter. The Wildcats have an offensive rating of 111.4, good for sixth-best nationally, while their 81.0 defensive rating is a still solid 27th. On the season Kansas State is shooting 48.7% from the floor, 71.6% from the free throw line, and 38.5% on three-pointers, as both the former and latter percentages place fifth nationally.

WVU is 19-9 historically against KSU, but lost both in the regular season away in Manhattan and in Kansas City in the Big 12 Quarterfinals last season.

Kansas State is let by 11th-year head coach Jeff Mittie, a 26-year Big 12 veteran who is 215-141 in his tenure at KSU.

Tip-off at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City is set for noon, while ESPNU is broadcasting the game.
