The West Virginia Women’s Tennis Club looked to build off the momentum they had gained from their victory over Houston last Friday night, however the Mountaineers faced an uphill battle against the top team in the Big 12 Conference the UCF Knights (No.19). West Virginia had another disappointing performance as they fell behind the Knights early in the match and were unable to recover from their slow start.

UCF Dominates The Mountaineers Early

UCF took an early lead after a dominating performance in the doubles matches. The Mountaineers didn’t show much improvement in singles play, as the Knights quickly won three matches to secure victory.

Senior Mille Haagensen was defeated in the No.1 seed match by decisions of 6-1, 6-1. Senior Michaela Kucharova lost in the No. 3 spot by 6-1, 6-3 decisions.

UCF clinched the match when WVU freshman Laura Villanueva Morillo was defeated by Jade Psonka by 6-3, 6-1 decisions.

With today’s loss, the Mountaineers have lost 11 of their last 12 matchups. West Virginia currently sits at number 15 in the Big 12 Conference, with an overall record of 7-14, and a conference record of 1-9.

West Virginia’s Next 3 Matchups

The Mountaineers hope to shake off today’s disappointing performance and get back into the win column as they return home to Morgantown to face-off against the Red Raiders of Texas Tech on Friday, April 4th, and against the Colorado Buffaloes on Sunday, April 6th for senior day. The Texas Tech Red Raiders will come into Morgantown winning 13 of their last 14 matchups.

Texas Tech is coming off a 4-1 win over UCF, and a 4-0 victory over Colorado. Texas Tech has a current overall record of 15-2, and a conference record of 8-1, The Red Raiders currently sit at number 2 in the Big 12 Conference.

West Virginia will see a much different opponent in Colorado. Colorado (much like West Virginia) has struggled most of the year. Colorado has a current overall record of 7-10 and a conference record of 1-8.  Colorado currently sits at number 13 in the Big 12 Conference.

The Mountaineers will finish off their season by traveling to Cincinnati to face the Bearcats. Cincinnati sits directly in front of West Virginia in the Big 12 Conference at number 14. The Bearcats have struggled and have lost 9 of their last 10 matchups. The Bearcats will have matchups against NKU, Colorado, Texas Tech, and Dayton before they finish their season against West Virginia.
