Team Blue Dominates In And Out Of The Water

The regatta not only included racing but the two teams also participated in a 2k on the erg before entering the boathouse. The result of the 2k was factored into the final result on the water.

The on-water events consisted of an open 4+ race followed by the first-and second-year’s 8+ race, an open 2x race and an open 8+ race. The 2x race was cancelled due to high winds as the 4’s and 8’s continued to battle.

The Blue squad started the day with a win on the erg deck. Senior Violet Hewett gave her team a 50-point lead heading into the water events by producing the fastest 2k time of the morning. The Gold Team would respond by winning two out of three water events as they earned wins in the open 4+ and the open 8+. Team Blue would stop the rally by Team Gold by winning the open 8+ to secure the victory.

At the conclusion of the regatta, Associate Head Coach Tina Griffith went on to discuss the events of the day, applauding many of the athletes for their exceptional performances.

Griffith Remarks

“The morning started off really well with a lot of personal bests on their 2k erg test…To earn points for the regatta, we grouped athletes together and those on the Gold team faced off with those on the Blue team for both raw score and average score points within that grouping. Even though the Blue team came away with a majority of the points, there was some really close racing within those groups and some excellent individual performances.” -Griffith

“On the water we had great weather and a significant number of fans, including alumni, family, friends, administrators and support staff.”  -Griffith

“It was really nice for the team to have such a robust and loud cheering section and to have the Mountaineer start us off with the musket. We really appreciate everyone who took the time to come down and support the athletes.” -Griffith

West Virginia Vs Eastern Michigan Preview

The Mountaineers will return to action on Saturday, April 26, at the Ford Lake Cup at Ford Lake Park in Ypsilanti, Michigan. West Virginia will face-off against Eastern Michigan University. Eastern Michigan’s last matchup was a split-squad match vs Michigan and Michigan State on April 5th.
