Sabins’ Assessment Of Houston Series
“Got a great start out of Griffin Kirn. He went six innings, gave up two runs. We had another fantastic start by Jack Kartsonas, he went seven innings and gave up no runs. Our offense was relentless, I think we had 29 runs over three games and played really clean baseball, some of the best defense we had played all season.” – Sabins
Sabins On West Virginia’s Successful Offense
Sabins would go on to discuss his team’s success at the plate, as the West Virginia offense has scored nine or more runs in eight out of the last ten games despite shaking up the lineup. When asked who was responsible for West Virginia’s explosive offense, Sabins credited his “extremely talented players” and his coaching staff.
“Extremely talented players, depth of roster, which creates competition and prevents complacency in training and our coaches.”- Sabins
Sabins On His Coaching Staff
“Jimmy Roesinger, Jedd Gyorko, Jacob Garcia do an incredible job staying connected with each and every individual guy and pushing people to get better and providing accurate information for those individuals to get better.”- Coach Sabins
Sabins On WVU’s Winning Percentage And Road Success
Sabins would go on to mention West Virginia’s winning percentage (88.2%, highest in the nation), as well as the team’s tremendous 18-1 record on the road.
“I think the school and the state take a lot of pride in grit, and they take a lot of pride in having no excuses and showing up, regardless of situation and battling through adversity.” – Sabins
Sabins On Ranking
Sabins was asked during the press conference about his thoughts on certain polls being uncertain about ranking West Virginia before ultimately ranking them at number 24 by D1 Baseball. Sabins was also asked about his recent conversation with the owner of D1 Baseball.
“Nothing was ever said about rankings or anything like that. So he just asked about the team and how guys were doing, and wanted to hear my opinions on Gavin Kelly and Chase Swain, and wanted to know how it had been being first year head coach and taking over the program.” – Sabins
“I don’t keep up too closely with any of that is the reality of it but I do know that that particular site does a great job covering our sport.” – Sabins
Sabins On His Players Handling Success
“Has to be the makeup of the kids, not falling in love with themselves, not being satisfied, having a greater goal in mind. If you’re satisfied with winning series or being the road game winning percentage leader, or the Big 12 pitcher of the week, or you actually care about what other people think, like polls or players of the day. If you you actually care about that stuff, you get really satisfied and you’re complacent and you’re like Hey, well we have the best winning percentage, blah blah blah, or we beat this team or whatever accolade false accolade you want. But there is one goal in this thing, so at this point it appears that this particular group of players has a larger goal in mind that they’re trying to accomplish.” – Coach Sabins
Sabins On Adjustments To Maintain Momentum
When asked what does West Virginia have to do to maintain their momentum, Coach Sabins responded by emphasizing the importance of consistency.
” I don’t think you ever change whether you’re winning or you’re getting your ass kicked. I think you have to have some process in mind that you believe is the right way to do things and then try to execute that on a daily basis is all you can do.”
– Coach Sabins
