Mountaineers Set the Pace on Day One of the Bison Outdoor Classic

The West Virginia University track and field team opened competition at the Bison Outdoor Classic on April 12th. Hosted by Bucknell University, the Bison Outdoor Classic marks one of the key meets for the Mountaineers outdoor season. The event attracts competitive collegiate athletes from across the region. For WVU, the first day of action provided strong performances and several personal bests.  

Women’s 800 Meters 

Freshman Carlene Temple notched the first personal best of the day with a time of 2:13.50 in the women’s 800 meter.  

Redshirt freshman Audrey Hall followed closely behind to receive her own personal best with a time of 2:16.67.  

Freshman Jennifer O’Palko did not achieve her personal best, however she performed impressively with a time of 2:24.15. 

Women’s Steeplechase 

In the second event of the day, the 3,000-meter steeplechase, redshirt junior Zara Zervos achieved a time of 11:13.80.  

In the 5,000-meters, redshirt junior Aubrie Custer posted a personal best time of 17:52.98. This performance earned Custer fifth place.  

Women’s 1,500 Meter Invite 

Madison Trippett, a graduate student from Parkersburg, West Virginia, received an unattached time of 4:27.27, earning seventh place in the event.  

Eva Rinker finished with a time of 4:55.39.   

Long Jump 

In the last event of the day, Sabria Jones claimed seventh place after jumping 5.39 meters.

Bison Outdoor Classic Day Two 

Day two of the Bison Outdoor Classic will begin on Sunday, April 13th, at 10:30 a.m. ET, in Lewisburg, Pa. WVU will participate in the mile, 100-meter hurdles, 400 meters, 100 meters, 200 meters, 3,000 meters, and the 4×400 meter relay.  

The Mountaineers also participated in the Bison Outdoor Classic in the 2023-24 season. While participating in the Classic, the Mountaineers split the weekend with the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, California.  

The highlights of the Bison Outdoor Classic came from Emily Bryce and Eva Rinker, who ran for respective times of 2:16.86 and 2:17.29. 

The Bison Outdoor Classic continues to be an important stop on WVU’s schedule, giving athletes the opportunity to improve their times mid-season while facing off against top programs. The variety of events on day one highlighted the depth of WVU’s roster, with underclassmen and veterans alike stepping up in competitive fields. 

Each performance builds valuable momentum as the team prepares for the championship portion of its season. With personal bests already recorded on day one, the Mountaineers aim to carry that energy into the second day of the meet. 

Upcoming Meets 

Next for the Mountaineers is the Bryan Clay Invitational, hosted in Azusa, California at the Cougar Athletic Stadium, from April 16-18. Subsequently, WVU will host the Mountaineer Twilight at the Track and Field Complex at Mylan Park on April 18-19, providing a platform for athletes to showcase their talents on home turf.
