Big 12 Men’s Golf Championship Day 1 Recap

Coach Covich’s Statement on Competing At Southern Hills

“Southern Hills is one of the best and most difficult courses in the country.”

West Virginia’s History In The Big 12 Golf Championship

At last year’s Big 12 Golf  Championship, the Mountaineers finished the tournament with their best performance in school history, earning a fifth-place finish in a 14-team league. In previous Big 12 Championships, West Virginia had finished in ninth-place in 2023, 2021, and 2018 when the Big 12 Conference consisted of only 10 teams.

Max Green would led the way for the Mountaineers in 2023 as he tied for 18th place with rounds of 74-72-72-72(+2)

Todd Duncan would shoot for 77-74-68-72=291 (+3) to finish at a tie for 23rd place.

West Virginia looks for a strong finish in the next two days as they will continue to the third round on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. ET, the final round will begin Thursday morning.

A Look At WVU’s Day One Performance

On Tuesday, the Mountaineers were paired with Baylor, Cincinnati, and UCF.

At the conclusion of Tuesday’s showing the Mountaineers sit in 14th place with rounds of 302-300 (+42).

West Virginia senior Max Green led the Mountaineers with rounds of 77-71 (+8). Kaleb Wilson finished the day at 75-75 (+10), Todd Duncan finished day one shooting 74-77 (+11), Westy McCabe shot 76-77 (+13), and Carson Kammann finished the day with rounds of 80-80 (+20)

Baylor

Davis Ovard led the way for the Baylor Bears in the first two rounds with a 3-over 143 to tie for ninth place. Ovard finished the second round shooting a 68 (1 of 10 rounds in red figures for day 1). Ovard is just seven shots off the pace of the leader Conner Williams (ASU).

Cincinnati

The Bearcats finished day 1 with a total of 584, just two shots outside the top five. Cincinnati was led by senior William McDonald who shot a 69 (-1) in the second round.

Freshman Leo Wessel had a solid performance as he opened the day with a 72 (+2) and a 73 (+3). Wessel would finish the day recording six birdies across the first two rounds as he finished tied for 19th place overall

Sun Devils Finish Day One At The Top

Arizona State had the best performance for day 1 as they finished in the number 1 spot after the first 36 holes of the tournament. The Sun Devils were led by Connor Williams, Williams is the individual leader as he finished the day with a score of -4.
